What this calculator tells you

A fair comparison works in four steps: work out your take-home pay at home, adjust it for price differences using PPP, convert it with the exchange rate, then find the gross salary in the destination country that gives the same take-home pay after its taxes.

Formula and methodology

  • 1. Source net pay

    net_src = TaxEngine[src].net(gross_src)
  • 2. PPP adjustment

    net_dest_ppp = net_src × PPP[dest] ÷ PPP[src]
  • 3. Destination gross-up

    gross_dest = TaxEngine[dest].grossFor(net_dest_ppp)

Frequently asked questions

Why not just convert with the exchange rate?

Exchange rates ignore how much things cost locally. Purchasing power parity (PPP) adjusts for price differences, and tax changes how much of your gross pay you keep.

What data does this need?

Tax rules for both countries, PPP conversion factors (for example from the World Bank's International Comparison Program) and exchange rates from a central bank.

When will it work?

As soon as each dataset is loaded from its official source and verified. The calculator lists exactly what is still missing.
